An original Ghurka camera bag, the Grip was introduced in 1980 for the adventurous lensman. Some of the icanic photographer such as Arnold Newman and Eve Arnold used this case! This model features the classic Ghurka patina that only time can deliver. Very unique and adjustable padded interior compartments house camera & equipment safely and securely. We asked the Ghurka master craftsmen to replace the leather trim and they did a fantastic job! This bag is ready to serve for another centennial! let me share the story of this bag from the creator, Marley Hodgson himself. Marley explained in one of our emails how Ghurka made this fabulous bag. Here are Marley’s words:
“Before I sign off, here is one about The Grip #35.
In 1980, the Leica Camera Company contacted me to design and make a limited edition of 40 unique Ghurka camera bags as part of a joint marketing program with Mercedes-Benz, who planned to introduce a new super-special car in 1981. Each bag was going to contain the latest Leica camera, along with extensive photo equipment. Each “loaded” bag would be placed in the trunk of the first 40 cars sold worldwide (I was told the value of each gift, including the Ghurka bag, was around $11,000).
When Leica and Mercedes received the first bag (and its cost), they were delighted and didn’t ask for a single change.
I’m unsure if the 40 cars were sold directly from Stuttgart or allocated to different countries.
Good luck, and Happy Holidays!
Marley”
